This past weekend I was able to capture + be a part of one of the sweetest proposals ever. Govind and Cate met in St. Louis a couple of years ago (where she’s from), and went on one of their first dates in Chicago where sparks flew between them. This July, they’ll both be moving to Chicago for work and Govind wanted to bring things back full circle for the proposal! They both arrived into town to look at apartments on Friday and that night they planned to go salsa dancing. What Cate didn’t know is that I would be waiting under the bridge by the riverwalk with a bouquet of flowers to surprise her with. I played it off as a “random act of kindness” and then offered to take their photo (the first image you see below). Then, as I stepped back to get a wider angle, Govind turned towards her to say a few words and surprised her…
Standing on the bridge watching all of it happen were their closest friends and siblings! Govind arranged for them to all be able to travel to the city and witness the proposal, and Cate was so happy when she saw them!
There were so many emotions! After everyone exchanged congratulations and hugs, we went on top of the bridge where Govind attempted to play an early April Fool’s prank on Cate. He handed me the real engagement ring for “ring shots” and then when I was supposedly done with those photos, I pretended to hand it back to him. Instead, he pulled out a “fake” ring from his pocket and then stood beside Cate in front of the bridge. And then…he dropped the ring into the water.
Ha! We all tried to play it off with him to convince her, but she wasn’t buying it!
The bystanders sure were, though! They all told her they did see him drop the ring into the water, and their hearts were breaking for her!
But still, she wasn’t buying it. She knows him too well!
Finally, I gave him the real engagement ring and he gave it back to her where it stayed on her finger for the rest of the night!
It was so cute, Cate couldn’t stop hugging him! They were both so excited!!
Then, we all went to Cindy’s Rooftop where both of their families were waiting to congratulate them. The city views there were incredible!
Congratulations, Govin + Cate!! Thank you so much for asking me to be a part of such a special moment, I couldn’t be happier for you!
